The Organic Connection
As we pile our shopping cart full of disease fighting, vitamin laden produce, we are missing a large piece of the puzzle. That piece comes in the form of, synthetic or petrochemical based pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and fertilizers. Chemicals that could actually cause the very disease you’re trying to prevent. This radical and outdated way of farming has created nutrient deficient soil and consequently, food that is lacking its full potential of nutrients and flavor.
Organic farming builds healthy soils which produce premium foods that are nutrient dense and taste great. Making the organic connection is a great way to protect your health and the environment.
Free Range vs. Organic Meat
Conventional farming employs methods that are irresponsible and offers no benefits to the consumer or society, only risk. Meat that is riddled with pesticides, hormones and antibiotic residues can disrupt the body’s natural hormone balance; contribute to anti-biotic resistance and increase cancer risks. Luckily there is a growing trend to move toward safer organic practices. Organic farms raise their meat without the use of hormones or antibiotics. The feed they give their animals must also be grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified seed. Organic farming also provides the animals with sufficient free movement, fresh air and natural daylight. All of these practices produce premium meat that is naturally delicious.
Genetic Modification
Genetically engineered (GE) foods are made from crops whose genes have been manipulated to have a specific characteristic (pesticide resistant or longer shelf life). The most common crops that are genetically modified are corn, soy, potatoes, canola and tomatoes. Most of these foods already sit in your cupboards and on your table. Scientists are creating genetic changes to our food supply “over-night” with no long term studies to evaluate their effect on the environment or human health.
Companies that promote this technology maintain that they will feed the world, create super nutritious food, the promises are endless. In truth GE crops have been shown to have a lesser yield than other crops, contain high amounts of plant toxins, damage organic farming practices, created super bugs and frankenfoods that create long-term environmental havoc.
The movement towards using only GE products allows the entire world’s food supply to be controlled by a select few corporations. Therefore, farmers are being pressured into using only genetically modified seed, meaning that many varieties of fruits and vegetables are endangered.
